Horse Training and Natural Horsemanship

Horse training begins as soon as a colt or filly is born. If you ride, own or work with horses or ponies you are reinforcing good or bad behavior to some degree. It really benefits you and your horses to have a solid understanding of what training is about.

Here you will find quality training information on starting horses, problem horses, groundwork, retraining, riding, manners, socialization, confidance, safety and more.

Bonding with Your Horse

Horses and Personal Space

Maintaining the integrity of personal space when working with horses is crucial for safety, trust, and bonding. Uninvited penetration of a handler's personal space is a behaviour that is preventable and manageable yet often overlooked. Likewise, awareness of the horse's personal space is as important as defending our own. […]

First Training Lessons for Your Horse

One of the reasons it’s so hard to write about training horses is that everyone wants a recipe. Do this, then that, then this other thing. Use such and such equipment, do so and so exercises a certain number of times. Follow the right steps and you’re guaranteed a trained horse. The problem is […]

What is Natural Horsemanship?

Most people have heard of horse whispering and natural horsemanship. But what is it? Many people dismiss the notion of natural horsemanship before understanding what it is.

Natural horsemanship has been around for centuries. It emphasizes equine psychology, body language, and herd dynamics to communicate and work effectively with our horse and pony partners. Natural horsemanship is horsemanship that makes sense - to us and the horse. It's about good horsemanship and dismisses ideas of physical and mental abuse.

There are many different approaches and theories when it comes to natural horsemanship. Some of the big names in natural horsemanship today include: John Lyons, Pat Parelli, Ray Hunt, Tom Dorrance, Clinton Anderson, Monty Roberts and Gawani Pony Boy. What works for one person may not work for the next. Many of our horse training articles focus on natural horsemanship techniques.

Round Pen: The Great Equalizer

Although many horsemen and trainers extol the virtues of the round pen, many horse owners still overlook just how powerful such a pen can be in developing or maintaining a relationship with a horse. This is a shame because it is truly what I call the Great Equalizer in a horse-human relationship. Perhaps that bears some clarification […]

Natural Horsemanship Training

Mastering Natural Horsemanship

Most people think you control a horse by controlling its head. You put on a lead rope or a bridle and use it to show the horse how you want him to start and stop and turn and move his feet and disengage this or that and other stuff. So how do you control a horse when you don’t have a lead rope or a bridle on him? A horse-logical training system like heeding teaches people how to […]

Horse Logic

Good horse training is boring to watch. It looks like nothing is happening. Many people are impressed by training methods that are nothing more than a blatant series of attacks on the horse because they are dramatic to watch. However, physically dominating a horse does not teach him […]
