Rescued PMU Horses Need Loving Homes!
I have just discovered that thousands of horses are in dire need of being adopted by loving homes - if they are not, these wonderful horses are at risk of being sent to auction, and ultimately the slaughter house.
Many of you may already know about the PMU industry, but for those who do not, I will provide an overview.
Premarin is a drug created using pregnant mares urine (hence PMU) and is used to treat women suffering with menopause symptoms. Since 1940, ranchers have been continuously breeding thousands of mares for this purpose. Premarin barns contain many mares which are bred and then kept in a small standing stall with a device that collects their urine when they pee. The foals are sold off, most to slaughter houses, and the mares will go out to pasture with some stallions to become re-bred.
Although the Premarin industry is changing, many of these ranches have gone out of business, leaving thousands of horses homeless and in danger of becoming someone’s dinner. There are some rescue agencies in place for these animals, but hay is expensive and they need help to find good homes before they are forced to sell them at auction.
Over the years, the PMU industry has tried to focus more on breeding their mares to quality studs to make good riding horses, and these horses and the mares desperately need homes with a loving and understanding owner. As I understand it, most of these horses have little handling and social skills, but it is my opinion that there are many good, lovely horses that simply need a chance to prove their quality. These horses include registered quarter horses, Percherons, appaloosas, sport-horses, cross breeds, and many beautiful foals.
Please take a moment to check out the web site of a horse rescue operation that I have discovered, and do let your fellow horse lovers know that these beautiful animals desperately need our help!
